Despite the constant propaganda against golf, there are heaps of heartwarming stories around the game bringing people together and healing fractures in society. Here is one.

Golf Digest reported a policeman in New Hampshire, USA, used golf to deter a repeat offender from falling into his bad habits again.

Justin Maguire was spending much of his time arresting 58-year-old Mark Yphantis for heavy drinking and therefore told the offender he would buy him a set of clubs if he got sober after finding out  they shared a love for the game.

Yphantis checked into rehab in January and by the end of April he had achieved 100 days sober. True to his word the policeman sorted out a set of clubs and also got a local course to donate 10 rounds of golf.

“Alcohol is a tough thing,” Maguire told the manchesterinklink.com. “I truly don’t know if I thought he’d do it but I’m a man of my word. The last thing I wanted was any attention from this.

“I just wanted to do something nice for a guy who likes golf because that’s my passion too.”
