This week’s tips are a little later coming than usual, given the fact that we’ve been recovering from the excitement that KJ Choi gave us last week. Though he didn’t end up bringing us the jackpot win, at 150/1 his placed finish resulted in a decent profit after all bar one of our picks took the weekend off!
This week sees the first event of the Florida swing, and event in which British and Irish players have fared well in recent years. Given the tendency for the wind to get up at Palm Beach Gardens, our picks reflect a group of players who have proven themselves to be good performers in such conditions.
Here’s who we’re wading into this week:
Ricky Fowler 12/1 – Stake £10 e/w Potential return £170
His form this season has been pretty spectacular and he was just one bad bounce away from picking up his second win in Scottsdale. We love watching him play in the wind, and with him and Rory taking top billing this week, we would expect him to come out on top as Rory is still fighting his putting stroke.
Patrick Reed 20/1 – Stake £10 e/w Potential return £270
The prickly American has been playing well without winning, but every time he tees it up in Florida he seems to be right in the mix. He’s due a win, and we’re backing him for another strong week.
Paul Casey 40/1 – Stake £10 e/w Potential returns £520
He may not be back to the form that saw him rise to #3 in the world, but he’s certainly playing much better and has a run of consistent performances behind him now. Having performed on a course that didn’t really suit him last week, we expect this layout to play into his hands. Keep an eye out for him rising steadily up the leaderboard.
Luke Donald 66/1 – Stake £10 e/w Potential return £845
Few players have as good a record in this tournament as our Luke. He’s back to playing some pretty good golf, accumulating money as he does and growing in confidence. Despite his drop in form over the last couple of seasons, his short game is still the envy of most other tour players and will come in particularly handy given the plethora of bunkers on the course.
Matthew Fitzpatrick 125/1 – Stake £5 e/w Potential returns £791.25
Amazing odds considering the form he’s shown in his young career. Every week he surprises us, and this could be a perfect week to start his charge toward Ryder Cup inclusion. A proven wind player and increasingly confident. We’ll be watching closely.
Boo Weekley 150/1 – Stake £5 e/w Potential returns £947.50
Boo is a Florida native and will love being back home. He generally doesn’t play too much, but you can be sure that when he does, he makes it count. He missed out here in the playoff in 2007, and fifth on his last outing at Scottsdale gives us confidence of a strong week.
