Open De Espana

It’s awesome to have Valderrama back on the European Tour and is a welcome respite from some of the other courses visited. After a great week for European golf at The Masters, we aren’t expecting too much from those who have travelled back this week – although ordinarily we’d be all over Soren Kjeldsen. Sergio would normally be worth backing but when you consider his odds and the travelling we can’t see any value there.

Andy Sullivan 22/1 – Stake £10 e/w Potential return £295
Made his debut at The Masters last week and looked pretty excited to be there. Missing the cut there shouldn’t give the impression of bad form, it’s very rare for debutants to succeed there. He should certainly be buoyed by some of his results in the US recently and will no doubt relish returning to the European Tour where he is very much considered one of the top dogs. He makes no secret about his love for Valderrama and should feel at ease.

Joost Luiten 25/1 – Stake £10 e/w Potential return £392.50
He’s been on a ridiculous run of form of late, recording 6 consecutive top 15 finishes up to India on his last outing. He’s certainly had success on this style of course before and will be seriously juiced up for some big finishes to push him toward a Ryder Cup berth as the season now heads to continental Europe.

Thomas Pieters 35/1 – Stake £10 e/w Potential return £457.50
Certainly not an obvious pick given his reputation as a real bomber, but he’s delighted to be back in Europe and is worth backing more often than not.

Alejandro Canizares 35/1 – Stake £10 e/w Potential return £457.50
Of all the Spaniards toward the top of the odds we think he can slip under the radar a little. He’s shown glimpses of form and being one of the best scramblers on the tour will be a great asset given the tiny greens. The fact that he’s got a couple of wins under his belt will help to calm the nerves.

Julien Quesne 66/1 – Stake £5 e/w Potential return £422.50
Here’s another man in a strong run of form right now. Having won previously just down the road in Marbella, he’ll hopefully feel comfortable in the region and continue his fine run of form, The return of some of the more travelled European stars has certainly helped to inflate his odds.

Richie Ramsay 70/1 – Stake £5 e/w Potential return £447.50
We’re going for another strike of the “nappy factor” as recently become father Ramsay returns to action. When the European Tour last played here, 18 of the 19 course debutants couldn’t better an opening round of 74. The other one, Ramsay, shot an awesome 65 which led him to a runner-up finish, after he was derailed by a late double bogey. He’s comfortable shaping the ball every which way and we think he’s got a great chance.
