We take a trip around America for March and, with The Players coming up, how could we not tee it up on the back nine at TPC Sawgrass? Nine holes where tournaments are won and lost. Who will stand tall, and howmany will fall victim to a watery grave at the famous island green 17th?
From Ponte Vedra, we follow the coast down to Daytona beforet urning inland. A quick stop in Orlando offers a dose of thrill-seeking at thet heme parks before the journey continues across Florida until we reach Bowling Green, just south of Tampa, for an assault on Streamsong Black.
Designed by Gil Hanse and opened in 2017, this modern links-style course provides a completely different challenge to the Tour stop in the north of the state. Vast fairways, dramatic bunkering and enormous greens reward imagination and creativity as much as precision, with the firm ground encouraging players to use the contours rather than simply firing at flags.
Finally we leave sunny Florida behind — and while the22-hour Greyhound to New York might build character, we’d strongly recommend the plane instead. From there we make our way to the tiny, windswept outpost of Fishers Island, home to an ultra-exclusive summer colony whose members have included the likes of Tom Brady and Julia Roberts, to play the prestigious Fishers Island Golf Club.
At just over 6,500 yards, it isn’t length that provides the challenge — it’s strategy, angles and nerve. Raynor’s famous template holes are on full display, including the Redan, Biarritz, Alps and Punchbowl, each demanding precision rather than brute force. Miss your angle into the greens and you’ll face some of the boldest contours in golf, where a seemingly safeshot can roll 30 feet away in seconds.
Fishers Island isn’t about over-powering a course — it’s about thinking your way around it. Control trajectory, use the contours and keep the ball on the right side of the hole, because here the differencebetween genius and disaster can be just a few feet. After a month-long tour across America, it’s a fitting finale: one of the most beautiful, strategic and exclusive courses in the world.
